Your DSG is trying to tell you something.

Shudders, delayed engagement, limp mode, a warning light that won't clear — every one of those is the gearbox reporting a fault. We read it, diagnose it properly, and fix the actual cause. Not just a reset.

Common presentations

If it feels like this, it's usually the gearbox — not you.

DSG faults rarely announce themselves clearly. Most owners describe one of these before we've even connected a scan tool.

Pulling away

Shudder or jerk from a stop

Vibration through 1st and 2nd gear, worse in stop-start traffic, is the classic sign of worn clutch packs or contaminated mechatronic oil in wet-clutch units.

Warning light

"Gearbox fault" on the dash

Often paired with reduced power. The car has already dropped into a protective mode — the fault is logged and needs to be read before it's cleared.

Response

Hesitation on take-off

A pause between accelerator input and drive engaging usually points to adaption values that have drifted, or early-stage mechatronic wear.

Limp mode

Stuck in one gear

The gearbox has protected itself by locking to a single ratio. This needs a full fault scan to identify what triggered it before any repair is quoted.

Noise

Whining under load

A rising whine that changes with road speed rather than engine RPM points toward bearing or gear-train wear rather than a clutch issue.

Servicing

Never had an oil change

DSG oil isn't "lifetime" in practice. Most failures we see in units past 100,000 km trace back to a service interval that was skipped.

Identify your gearbox

Not all DSGs are built the same way.

Select your make, model and year and we'll tell you which DSG your car is most likely running, with the full spec sheet. Every quote is still confirmed against the actual vehicle before any work starts.

Guidance based on typical fitment — DSG choice tracks engine torque more than model year, and exact codes vary by market. We always confirm the precise unit on your vehicle before quoting.

What we do

Every service, built around the diagnosis.

We don't quote off a symptom description over the phone. Every job starts with the same scan you saw above — the repair follows what it actually finds.

01

Full diagnostic scan

Live data, stored and pending fault codes, and adaption values read directly from the mechatronic unit — not a generic engine-light scan.

02

Oil & filter service

Correct-spec fluid and filter change on the interval that actually matters, with old fluid inspected for the metal content that tells us how the clutches are wearing.

03

Mechatronic repair & reman

Valve body and solenoid repair where possible, remanufactured unit exchange where it isn't — priced and explained before any work starts.

04

Clutch pack replacement

Wet and dry clutch pack replacement, matched to the specific unit and torque rating rather than a one-size part.

05

Adaption reset & recalibration

Clutch adaption and gear-shift point recalibration after any repair, so the box learns clean values instead of carrying old wear data forward.

06

Pre-purchase inspection

Buying a used DSG-equipped car? We'll scan the gearbox before you commit, not after the warning light comes on.

How a job runs

Five steps, in this order, every time.

The sequence matters — skipping the scan to jump straight to a quote is how the wrong part gets replaced.

1

Scan

Full fault and live-data read from the mechatronic unit.

2

Diagnose

Faults cross-checked against symptoms and drive behaviour.

3

Quote

A written quote against the actual cause, not the symptom.

4

Repair

Parts fitted, adaptions cleared, values recalibrated.

5

Road test

Verified under load before it's handed back, with warranty.

Why here, specifically

General mechanics reset the light. We fix why it came on.

  • Factory-level scan tools

VCDS and manufacturer-equivalent diagnostic equipment, not a generic reader.

  • DSG is all we specialise in

No engine or brake work competing for the bay — every day is gearbox diagnosis and repair.

  • Written, itemised quotes

You see exactly what failed and why, before anything is booked in.

  • Warranty on every repair

Parts and labour backed in writing, with a documented road test on file.

DSG basics

Common questions about DSG gearboxes.

A few things worth knowing before your next service or repair decision.

What is it

What actually is a DSG?

DSG stands for Direct-Shift Gearbox — Volkswagen Group's name for its dual-clutch automatic transmission, used across VW, Audi, Škoda and SEAT/Cupra. Two clutches pre-select the next gear so shifts happen almost instantly, but it means two separate clutch assemblies to maintain instead of one.

Reliability

Is DSG reliable?

Reasonably, if it's serviced. The overwhelming majority of failures we see trace back to a skipped fluid change rather than a design fault — DSG fluid is not "lifetime" in practice, whatever the original service schedule implied.

Servicing

How often should the oil be changed?

Every 60,000 km is the general rule across DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500 wet-clutch units. The dry-clutch DQ200 has no fluid to change in the same way, but the mechatronic unit still benefits from inspection at similar intervals.

Repair vs replace

Can a DSG be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Depends what's actually failed. Valve body and solenoid faults are usually repairable. A mechatronic unit with internal electrical failure is typically replaced with a remanufactured exchange unit rather than repaired outright — we'll always tell you which applies before quoting.

Terminology

Is DSG the same as a normal automatic?

No. A torque-converter automatic uses fluid to transmit drive; a DSG uses two physical clutch packs, like two manual gearboxes working alternately. That's what makes the shifts faster, but it's also why clutch wear — not just fluid condition — is part of the picture.

Driving style

Does how I drive affect DSG wear?

Yes — heavy stop-start traffic and riding the brake while creeping forward puts more cycles through the clutch packs than open-road driving. It doesn't cause faults on its own, but it accelerates wear that a skipped service would otherwise have caught earlier.

From the workshop floor

What owners tell us after the fault's gone.

"Two other places just wanted to reset the fault and send me on my way. These guys actually pulled the adaption data and showed me the worn clutch reading."

Daniel R. — Golf GTI, DQ250

"Went in stuck in limp mode expecting a full mechatronic replacement quote. Turned out to be a solenoid — fixed same week, half the price I'd braced for."

Priya S. — Tiguan, DQ381

"Had the DSG oil done here after finding out it had never been changed in 6 years. Shudder I'd gotten used to on cold mornings is just gone."

Marcus T. — Passat, DQ250
